Dr Ionas Miliatos

Dr. Ionas Miliatos is a highly experienced ophthalmic surgeon based in Paphos, Cyprus, specialising in a range of eye conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and cataract surgery. With a career spanning over two decades, Dr. Miliatos is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for his patients, utilising the latest advancements in ophthalmic treatments and surgeries.

Dr. Miliatos began his academic journey at the Lyceum of Kykkos in Paphos, graduating in 1997 before continuing his medical studies at the Medical School of Patras, Greece, where he graduated with honours in 2005. After completing his military service as a reserve artillery officer in the Armed Forces, Dr. Miliatos moved to Sweden in 2006 to specialise in ophthalmology at the University Ophthalmology Department in Gothenburg. He further trained at the Uddevalla Ophthalmology Clinic, one of the largest in Sweden, and excelled in the Swedish national specialty exams, graduating with honours.

In Sweden, Dr. Miliatos focused on cataract surgery, a field in which he has performed over 2,500 procedures. He also specialised in the treatment of macular degeneration. His expertise grew as he continued to work at Uddevalla, where he became an external consultant for various hospitals and private clinics. Between 2013 and his move to Cyprus, Dr. Miliatos served as the director of the Department of General Ophthalmology and the Emergency Ophthalmology Unit. He also held the role of Administrative Deputy Director at the clinic, overseeing day-to-day operations.

Dr. Miliatos’ clinical expertise includes the evaluation and treatment of strabismus (squint), pediatric eye examinations, and glaucoma management. He performs YAG-laser treatments for secondary cataracts (PCO) and uses advanced laser therapies for retinal conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and certain types of macular degeneration. Dr. Miliatos is also highly skilled in cataract surgery, providing patients with personalised care to ensure optimal surgical outcomes. His experience extends to the treatment of macular diseases, including the use of intraocular injections and macular laser therapies for conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.
